A Unesco World Heritage Site (Malacca and George Town)

The historic cities of Malacca and George Town, were inscribed together as a single 'cultural property' and listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on 7 July 2008. Both cities are located along the straits of Malacca, and were the important trade centre many centuries ago.

 

These sites, known as the "Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca", were recognized for the unique status as living multicultural heritage communities. From 15th century, the port of Malacca and George Town were the centre of attraction to traders and merchants from all over the world providing the opportunities for the rich cultural exchanges between the East and the West.

 

The unique and diverse cultures in George Town and Malacca can bee seen form the unique multicultural character of building, cultural traditions, trades, activities, living heritage and the on-going exchanges between the various communities, Malay, Chinese, Indian and others.

 

The George Town World Heritage Site with its diverse cultural groups from throughout Asia and Europe in the past has historically demonstrates, the Outstanding Universal Values (OUVs) in the living and built  environment.

 

When you walk through the city today, you will have the sense of 'cultural space' emerges from the smells and sounds, people living around the city, the names of streets, the architectural styles of the building and the trades and occupancy patterns. All theses will present you the civic pluralism and collective cultural from the different communities the city's history.

George Town is the capital of Penang which is also the centre for Penang state administration and centre for important commercial activities, social activities and entertainment. Old Building - Interior

 

 

Shop Houses, are characteristics of the urban architecture of towns in Asia from the 18th-20th century. Shop houses are terraced building, one to three storeys high, which incorporate a space for business on the ground floor, and a residence for the trader or workers on the upper floors.


Fort Cirnwallis, Penang

 

 

Fort Cornwallis was the East India Company's first military and administrative base.  It was erected in 1786 on the site of Sir Francis Light's historic landing. Relics at the fort include a chapel, gunpower magazine and cell rooms. The famous dutch cannon or meriam seri rambai is prominently erected facing the sea. More >>.

 



The Goddes Mercy Temple

 

 

This popular temple is known as The Goddess Mercy Temple, dedicated to Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy. The first foundation was laid in 1728 by Chinese settlers and completed in 1800. More >>
